Prayer and Fasting
I will never forget the first time I advised a man to fast and pray for his wife. You would have thought I asked him to castrate himself. "That won't work" he protested, "I'm looking for something that will help change her." It took a lot of persistence on my part to convince him that he should try it.
The truth is we are all looking for that magic button or spell that will transform our wives into the perfect woman. But there are no perfect wives or perfect people. There are only people growing into the image of Christ and those who aren't. The best we can hope for is to help our wives fall madly in love with Jesus and be transformed into His image and character. Did you know that you can help? You can be the key to help her breakthrough and become all that Jesus desires for her to become.
Men, you DON'T have the power to change your wife, no matter how much you try to convince them. No matter how solid your evidence from the Bible. No matter how persistently you hound them. You CAN'T change their heart, even if you succeed in changing their actions. So what can you do? Intercede on her behalf before the Father regularly, passionately, and persistently. Carry her name before the Throne of God, and cover her in your prayers.
The only One strong enough to change your wife is your Father in Heaven. So pray and fast on your wife's behalf, go before the His Throne and plead her case. Fight on her behalf for purity, character, joy, and hope. Ask God to do whatever it takes for her.
One of the first prayers I began to pray everyday over my wife is:
Lord, Let this be the best year ever from my wife's point of view.
You can't pray that prayer every day for your wife and then turn around and mistreat her, or yell at her, or be angry with her... so stop right now and pray it with me; "Lord, Let this be the best year ever from my wife's point of view."
I am trying to recruit everyone I know to join me in this movement. Commit today to pray and fast for your wife once a week. I choose to eat an early supper on Sunday and a later supper on Monday, fasting the time between. That gives me a 24 hour fast every week where I seek the Lord, pray for my wife and kids, and pray for those who are making disciples of all nations.
